Positive starts for Nenagh and Newport

Nenagh AFC got their premier league campaign off to the best possible start with a 3-2 home win over Kilmallock last Wednesday.

All five goals came in the first half with Ciaran O'Reilly, Roy Creagh and Danny Butler on target for the Brickfields side who were quickly back in action on Saturday evening, making the trip to Ballynanty Rovers where very young outfit fell to a 3-1 defeat despite a tremendous display.

Ballynanty took the lead on 25 minutes when Dermot Fitzgerald fired home a good left footed shot. Nenagh pulled up their sleeves and levelled after 32 minutes when young Jack Daly scored a stunning lob from all of 50 yards.

Minutes later, lady luck wasn’t on Nenagh's side when twice they tried to clear from the box and a rebound fell to Arron Nunan who duly dispatched to the net with a good finish to restore Ballynanty's lead.

The game was in the balance with 15 minutes left when Ciaran O'Reilly was very unlucky to see his attempted clearance fly past Aaron Savage. With five minutes to go, Nenagh were unlucky not to pull a goal back when Luke Kennedy's volley just went wide.

Special mention to Jack Daly and Mark Kelly who despite such young ages produced great displays on their full debuts. However, the evening was marred by a bad injury sustained to young Daniel Ryan.
