Darren Dunne

Dunne competes for Ireland at European Championships

Nenagh Triathlon Clubs Darren Dunne finished a credible 42nd out of 59 in the Triathlon in the European Championships in Glasgow last Thursday.

Competing in the green singlet, Dunne was selected on the Irish team along with Russell White and Benjamin Shaw to race against the very best in Europe, including British star Alastair Brownlee.

The 21-year-old finished the race in 1 hour 54 minutes and 41 seconds, some seven minutes behind the race winner Pierre La Corre from France.

It was the first time Darren has competed in a senior European Championships and admitted “it was damn hard.”

“The start of the swim was alright and I stayed with the lads I am usually with but when we had to come out of the water at half way and dive back in, I died a bit and the gap to the bunch grew to about twenty seconds and that was that.

“I jumped on the bike with a Dutch and a Norwegian and we just drilled it and caught about half the field by the end of the spin. I thought my legs felt good on the bike but they must have been shot and I didn’t do too well but I ran as well as I could and got was I deserved,” he said.
