The history of Ashley Park
Ormond Historical Society talk
The Ormond Historical Society talk on Monday, November 17, next in the Abbey Court Hotel at 8pm is on a topic that should be of wide local interest.
The talk is titled, ‘Ashley Park: The Story of a Tipperary Big House and Estate, its Owners and their Lifestyles’. The speaker is well known local historian and OHS committee member, Danny Grace.
Ashley Park – on the road from Nenagh to Borrisokane – is best known to the public today as a desirable wedding venue. But it has a long and interesting history stretching back to the 18th Century. The speaker will discuss that long history; the large estate that once sustained it; and its several owners and inhabitants over the generations – some of whom, indeed, had interesting, not to mention unusual, lifestyles. The talk will be vividly illustrated with original documents, illustrations, and photographs.
The speaker, Danny Grace, has written on numerous aspects of the history of Co Tipperary. He is best known for his books: Portrait of a Parish: Monsea & Killodiernan (1996); The Great Famine in Nenagh Poor Law Union (2000); Kiladangan GAA Club: A Centenary History (2015); Glimpses of the Past (2021). He contributes regularly to the Tipperary Historical Journal and his occasional series, Glimpses of the Past, has been running in the Nenagh Guardian since 2013. He has been associated with the Ormond Historical Society for many years, serving as its first Hon President on its foundation in 1977.
We extend a hearty welcome to members and the general public to join us at the Abbey Court Hotel Nenagh on Monday, November 17, next for this our second talk of the current season. We would ask those renewing membership or intending to join to arrive as early as possible to facilitate the talk starting at 8pm.
