Clinic at risk of closure following vandalism
Private Therapy Clinic Limited is offering a €5,000 reward to any individual who provides information that directly leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the vandalism of their Nenagh premises on Martyrs Road.
This incident occurred between 10pm on Wednesday, May 7, and 6.30am on Thursday, May 8, when the clinic sustained an estimated €20,000 in damages — including smashed windows and property destruction — just as they were beginning to provide essential mental health support to the Nenagh community.
The break-in occurred just hours before it was due to welcome its first in-person patient at its newly-launched Nenagh office on Martyr's Road. The first therapist on-site arrived early to prepare for the appointment, only to discover a leak in the building. Initially believed to be a burst pipe, it quickly became clear that a skilled criminal had broken in through the back door using specialist tools to remove the lock, which was later found on the floor.
Private Therapy Clinic Limited, an established UK-based mental health provider with a growing presence across Ireland - including offices in Dublin, Cork, Limerick and now Nenagh - offers some of the most affordable private psychiatry and neurodiversity assessments in the country. The clinic supports a wide range of mental health needs through a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, psychologists and counsellors.
The team at Private Therapy Clinic are appealing to:
- Local businesses with CCTV on or near the clinic or nearby on the main streets in Nenagh, including Kenyon Street, Pearse Street, William Street, Sarsfield Street, Silver Street, or Mitchel Street;
- Residents with dashcams parked overnight in town;
- Anyone who saw suspicious behaviour in central Nenagh around that timeframe.
They urge the public to report any footage or information to Nenagh Garda Station on 067 50450, and email the clinic at management@privatetherapyclinic.com. Their website is www.privatetherapyclinic.ie
Clinic at Risk of Closure
Sadly, as it currently stands, the Private Therapy Clinic Nenagh branch is at serious risk of permanent closure within the coming months.
Clinic founder and mental health entrepreneur Dr Becky Spelman, a Nenagh native, said: “If we are left to bear the costs of the damage ourselves, we may no longer be able to continue offering affordable neurodiversity assessments and private psychiatric care, which are in short supply nationwide. The public's help could be the reason we survive. The vandals smashed every window in the building, destroyed every mirror, and deliberately damaged a pipe beneath the sink, flooding all four consultation rooms and the reception area. Curiously, high-end furniture in the only fully furnished therapy room was left untouched.
“It’s unlike anything we’ve ever experienced in our 14 years of operating in the UK. We’re heartbroken - not just because of the damage - but because we’ve put so much care into creating a peaceful, healing space for the community. This was meant to provide a space save for many people who need support in Nenagh.”
Gardaí are investigating the incident and anyone with information is urged to come forward. Terms and conditions apply to the reward.
