Strategic Transition of Para Sports to National Governing Bodies

Paralympics Ireland has confirmed that the transition of the governance and administration of three para sports to their respective National Governing Bodies: Para Swimming to Swim Ireland, Para Athletics to Athletics Ireland, and Boccia to the Irish Wheelchair Association will be completed on 1st August when Para Athletics transitions to Athletics Ireland.

During this three year project Boccia transferred to IWA in December 2025, Para Swimming to Swim Ireland in May 2026, and with a Framework Agreement now signed between the parties Para Athletics will transfer on 1st August.

This transition represents a significant and positive milestone in the continued development of para sport across Ireland. By aligning these sports within their respective National Governing Bodies, athletes will benefit from enhanced pathways, greater integration, and strengthened support structures at all levels of participation and performance.

While an event to mark the official transfer of these sports will take place in the coming months, Paralympics Ireland wishes to acknowledge and sincerely thank all those who contributed to this collaborative process. We extend our gratitude to Sport Ireland for its ongoing guidance and support, and to all members of the Transition Committee for their dedication and commitment. Special recognition is due to the Committee’s Independent Chair, Liam Sheedy, whose leadership and expertise were instrumental in guiding this process.

We also acknowledge the valued contribution of athletes, coaches, volunteers, and stakeholders across all three sports, whose input and engagement have ensured that athlete welfare and development remain at the heart of this transition.

This transition comes at an exciting time for Paralympics Ireland as we prepare to launch our latest strategic plan, which will set out an ambitious vision for the continued growth, success, and visibility of Para sport in Ireland.

Paralympics Ireland will continue to work closely with Sport Ireland, Swim Ireland, Athletics Ireland, and the Irish Wheelchair Association to support a seamless transition and to ensure that athletes are empowered to achieve their full potential on both national and international stages.
