Nenagh dog is 'Bravest Pet'
Nenagh celebrated success at the second annual Petmania Ruby Heart Awards, with local favourite Mr Shelby Rohan recognised among Ireland's most inspiring pets, animal advocates, rescue organisations and pet-friendly businesses.
After receiving more than 700 nominations from across the country, just 30 finalists representing 15 counties were selected to attend the national awards ceremony in Kilkenny.
Hosted by broadcaster, sustainability influencer and DJ Fionnuala Moran, the awards celebrated the extraordinary impact animals have on people's lives and recognised the dedicated people, organisations and communities working tirelessly to improve animal welfare across Ireland.
Nenagh's Mr Shelby Rohan was named winner of the Bravest Pet Award, sponsored by Benebone. Shelby was recognised for his remarkable courage and determination after being diagnosed with Grade 5 Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), requiring emergency spinal surgery.
Despite being left paralysed from the hips down, Shelby has embraced life with extraordinary resilience. Through ongoing physiotherapy, hydrotherapy and rehabilitation, he continues to enjoy adventures, explore the outdoors in his wheelchair and inspire everyone around him with his positivity and determination.
Aislinn Flood, Mr Shelby’s owner, commented: “Before Shelby got IVDD we always went to dog shows, events and festivals and I didn’t want that to stop just because of his disability. Winning Bravest Pet is extra special, as he is so deserving as I feel he has come on so much with in the last few months. He has adapted to his new life so well and showed us life doesn't have to stop.”
The recognition places Tipperary among just eight counties represented among the national winners at this year's awards.
The Petmania Ruby Heart Awards continue to provide a platform for recognising the animals, individuals, organisations and businesses whose actions strengthen communities and improve the lives of pets throughout Ireland. Mr Shelby's story serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience animals can show in the face of adversity and the extraordinary bond they share with the people who care for them.
