Coolbawn farmer features in powerful new docuseries
On Monday, June 22, Irish Farmers, A Love Story will screen at the Lighthouse Cinema in Dublin.
Directed by filmmaker Haven Worley and produced by Food Tank Films, led by global non-profit Food Tank, the short documentary serves as the opening chapter of an ambitious docuseries currently being developed for international production. Inspired by an original theatre concept from co-founders of Food Tank, Bernard Pollack and Dani Nierenberg, the series follows three remarkable Irish farmers—Ailbhe Gerrard of Brookfield Farm in County Tipperary, Carina Roseingrave of Burren View Farm in County Clare and 2026 Farmer Ambassador of the Year, and Sophie Bell of County Cavan—as they travel across Ireland performing a theatre show centered on an unconventional love story.
Not a story of romance, but of devotion to the land, the animals, the communities they nourish, and the generations who have shaped Ireland's agricultural heritage. Directed by Worley, part of a new generation of female filmmakers bringing fresh perspectives to documentary storytelling, the project places women farmers at the centre of a cultural narrative rarely seen on screen. Entirely women-led, the series reimagines farmers as the protagonists of a powerful and deeply human story about identity, stewardship, resilience, and hope. At a time when many people are increasingly disconnected from where their food comes from, Irish Farmers, A Love Story asks a simple but urgent question: what happens when we lose our connection to the land?
Through the lives of its three protagonists, the film explores how rebuilding that relationship can strengthen communities, restore a sense of belonging, and inspire a more sustainable future. The story is not only about farming; it is about the ties that bind people to place, culture, and one another. This vision closely reflects the mission of Food Tank, the globally recognised food systems organisation dedicated to building a more sustainable, equitable, and resilient future through food. Through research, advocacy, and storytelling, Food Tank champions the innovators, farmers, and changemakers working to transform how the world grows, distributes, and values food.
Irish Farmers, A Love Story embodies that mission by elevating voices that are too often overlooked and demonstrating the profound role farmers play in addressing some of the defining challenges of our time, from climate resilience and biodiversity to public health and community wellbeing. Already attracting international attention through screenings at SXSW, the Bentonville Film Festival, events in partnership with the Rockefeller Foundation and Enviu in Nairobi, Kenya, the Ballymaloe Festival of Food, and more soon to be publicly announced, the film has resonated with audiences around the world because its message is universal.
In an increasingly fast-paced and fragmented society, it offers a hopeful reminder that the future of food is ultimately a human story.
More than a documentary, Irish Farmers, A Love Story is a celebration of the people who care for the land and a call to reconnect with the stories beneath every meal. As the project moves toward its next chapter as a full docuseries, it invites audiences to see farmers not only as food producers, but as cultural leaders, storytellers, and custodians of our collective future.
