Traffic calming measures for Newtown
Chairman of Tipperary County Council and local councillor John Carroll has welcomed possible funding for traffic calming measures for Newtown village on the R494.
Back in 2025, Councillor Carroll was informed by the county council of funding as part of the Active Travel programme of €5,000 for provision of footpaths, raised pedestrian crossings at the eastern side of the village, close to Newtown bridge on the Nenagh side, and raised crossing on the western side, just above the church on the Portroe side of the village, and also consideration of further crossing close to the junction of the Youghalarra road on the R494 in the village. There will be some planting works at particular locations throughout the village of Newtown.
Councillor Carroll stated he was briefed at a council workshop last week by council engineers as part of the Active Travel programme on draft plans for Newtown village as part of the Active Travel programme for the local village.
Tipperary County Council will now prepare a Part Eight planning application, which will give effect to the Active Travel project, which will go through a local community consultation process to ensure all members of the community are consulted and have a meaningful input into the proposed Active Travel works and traffic calming measures for the village of Newtown.
Councillor Carroll welcomed the positive news by the county council and stated it will give a significant degree of safety to the residents of the village in slowing down vehicular traffic, and will further enhance the village by provision of footpaths and some planting works at particular locations throughout the village of Newtown.
Councillor Carroll stated he will keep the residents of the village and environs updated on various stages of the council process.
