Festive dip for the hospice on Lough Derg

The annual Christmas Day Swim at Youghal Quay on Lough Derg was very different this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Many still turned up observing the public health guidelines and raised some much-needed funds for the North Tipperary Hospice Movement.

Precautions introduced due to the pandemic meant the usual large crowds that gather at the quayside for the annual dip in the icy waters of the lake could not take place on December 25th. But undaunted, the organisers introduced a new and safe way to enjoy the annual mid-winter swim while still raising vital funds for the local hospice service.

To avoid crowds at the quay and to include those who can't make it home this year, the organisers have decided to hold a virtual swim that brave-hearted souls can take part in on any day over over the festive season.

This can be completed up to Sunday, January 3rd, and people who wish to do the “Youghal Quay Christmas Day Swim” can do so at the quay itself, or in any part of Ireland or across the globe.

Swimmers and non-swimmers can still contribute to this worthy cause, which has helped so many families across North Tipperary when it is most needed.

It's easy to donate. The organisers have set up a GoFundMe link where monies can be donated. The link is, https://gf.me/u/zbqma7

But remember, keep safety in mind and consider weather and water conditions wherever you swim. While the official swim did not take place as usual at the quay on Christmas Day, it should not detract from the fun as those who do undertake the virtual swim anywhere in the world over since mid-December can post their photos of their dip in aid of the hospice to the event Facebook page - Youghalarra Christmas Swim. So share in the fun and don't forget to donate.
