Perhaps it wasn’t the performance that was wanted or expected against Clare in the quarter-final, but maybe it was one that was needed from a Tipperary perspective.

Much of the early stages of the championship had been nothing more than challenge game fare and this can easily lead to an element of complacency, even among the most successful teams, but Tipperary full-back Maria Curley believes there was nothing of the sort in camp in the lead up to the Clare game.

We never underestimated Clare at all,” she said.

We’ve played them numerous times over the last number of years and a good rivalry has developed between the both of us, so it was always going to be a dogfight.

They came out fighting, they were fit, they were physical, and I think they really outworked us all over the field in the first half and we all knew that at half time, so we just composed ourselves and got a few scores off at the start of the second half and up the work-rate.

But we got the win, some things were highlighted that we needed to work on and we’ve been doing that in training since, but I suppose we were just relieved when we heard the final whistle.”
