If ever there was an endorsement for the value of grassroots club hurling, it was the final 15 minutes of this spellbinding North Tipperary Junior ‘B’ Hurling Final last Tuesday week.

Four Templederry goals in a surreal closing quarter culminated in them lifting the Dan Gleeson Cup for a fifth time – a fitting tribute to Gleeson, who himself was a dedicated servant to both Toomevara and Templederry GAA clubs. Poignantly, Templederry were the first winners of the cup back in 1984, when the team was captained by Dan’s son Richard.

Templederry trailed by 0-10 to 0-6 at the break and eight minutes into the second-half, the result looked like a foregone conclusion after Shanahan flicked a clever handpass to corner-forward Daniel Ryan, who angled the ball past John Kennedy in the Templederry goal, extending his side’s lead to seven points.

Less than five minutes later, seven became ten when substitute Ryan Toohey managed to scramble the ball to the net following a moment of pandemonium in front of the Templederry goal. That was it then, fate sealed, Silvermines - North champions – not quite yet.
