Walkover leads to fixtures pressure

By Shane Brophy

From the moment Carrick Swans failed to fulfil their fixture with Thurles Sarsfields in the County Senior Hurling Championship last April, it had implications on virtually every team in the competition and the ripple effects of it came to pass last weekend.

With the South Tipp club having conceded a walkover, it meant score difference couldn't be used if need to determine final placings in the group which also contained Drom & Inch and Upperchurch/Drombane who all went onto beat each other, and has meant a three-way playoff will now have to take place to determine which two teams will progress from group 3 to the county quarter-finals.

Because Thurles Sarsfields are in a Mid final next Sunday and Upperchurch in county football championship action on Saturday also, the first playoff between Drom & Inch and Upperchurch/Drombane takes place next Tuesday, 11th September in Templetuohy at 8.00pm. The winner of that game will then face Thurles Sarsfields in playoff 2 the following Sunday, 16th September in Holycross with the final playoff game, involving Thurles Sarsfields once more, taking place on Wednesday 19th September in Templetuohy at 8.00pm.
