Derby hero Good News retired
The increased temperature over the past week has seen a shake-up in the greyhound racing schedule as some meetings were forced to cancel while those that did go ahead were delayed to allow for cooler racing conditions.
All in the interest of welfare, a directive from the IGB to suspend any track activity between the hours of 10am and 7.30pm is a welcome move but as one of the meetings which was cancelled, the Longford Derby which was due to be run on Friday has been rescheduled for this week where the Pat Guilfoyle trained Cabra Twister and Cabra Hurricane remain the big fancies for victory.
In the throws of a hugely exciting period for the Moneygall kennels, the biggest news of the past week came away from the track when Pat Guilfoyle announced the retirement of 2017 Irish Greyhound Derby winner Good News.
Suffering an injury in a recent trial, the 2017 Supreme Greyhound Of The Year will not now defend his Derby title with Pat declaring: “His racing career is over following a hock injury sustained in a trial, late last week.
“In injury terms, it’s not the worst that could have happened. He fractured a central tarsal bone but had pins inserted over the weekend and will make a full recovery with no lasting effects. He’ll remain here with us while he’s recuperating and take up stud duties once his recovery is sufficiently advanced.”
