5,000 to take part in Operation Transformation 5K in Association with Sport Ireland

Sport Ireland is once again delighted to partner with RTÉ, Athletics Ireland, Dublin City Council, Healthy Ireland and the OPW for the 2018 Operation Transformation 5K in Phoenix Park this Saturday, February 24th.

With the event now fully subscribed, over 5,000 runners, joggers, strollers and walkers are set to join the five Operation Transformation leaders in the beautiful surrounds of the famous Dublin parkland for what is the 8th edition of this national event.

Among those in attendance on Saturday will be Lord Mayor of Dublin, Mícheál MacDonncha, who is looking forward to welcoming participants from all over the country: “I am delighted that I will be in Phoenix Park on Saturday to greet the 5,000 participants taking part in the Operation Transformation 5k run. This is always a fantastic fun filled event which draws people from all over Ireland to the capital. I would like to wish all of those running, jogging and walking the very best and I’ll see you all at the start line on Saturday!”

According to the latest Irish Sports Monitor Report, running is one of Ireland’s most popular sports with 8.2% of adults taking part in regular running sessions.

An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar TD, will be one on the 5,000 participants taking to the roads of Phoenix Park on Saturday. He’s looking forward to the event: “The Operation Transformation 5k is always a great event and I’m happy to be taking part this year. Whether walking or running, getting out and getting active is so important for both physical and mental wellbeing. Operation Transformation has played a big role in inspiring many to change their habits and move towards a healthier lifestyle. Through events such as this, Operation Transformation has shown us that small steps can make a big difference to your health, you just need to start.”

Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross TD, will be attending the event: “I attended the Operation Transformation 5k for the first time last year and what an enjoyable occasion it was. It was heartening to see so many people turn out to participate in such high spirits.  I look forward to being in the Phoenix Park on Saturday to support and applaud the 5,000 plus participants along with the Operation Transformation leaders.  Events like the Operation Transformation 5k are so important in the promotion of healthy living and the pursuit of exercise across the nation. I commend Operation Transformation, Sport Ireland, Athletics Ireland, Healthy Ireland and the OPW for the organisation of this wonderful event.”

50,000 participants have taken part in the free Operation Transformation 5k Runs in Phoenix Park and in Cork since 2011.

Sport Ireland Chief Executive, John Treacy, highlighted the importance of this event: “Sport Ireland is delighted to be working with RTÉ, Athletics Ireland, Healthy Ireland and the OPW on the Operation Transformation 5K for the 8th year running. The Irish Sports Monitor highlighted that running remains one of the most popular forms of physical activity. The Operation Transformation 5K is a very important event in the promotion of healthy living and the pursuit of exercise and I look forward to seeing another big turnout of participants on Saturday.”

The Operations Transformation 5K gets underway in the Phoenix Park on Saturday, February 24th at 10am.
