Council supports N24 motorway proposal

Tipperary Co Council has joined the local authorities of Kilkenny and Waterford in calling for an upgrade of the N24 (Limerick-Waterford road) to motorway status.

The councils agree that the proposal would reduce the urgency to construct new direct motorways between Limerick and Cork and Waterford and Cork. It would also save in the region of €340 million, improve the viability of ports in the South East and South West, and assist the growth of Tipperary towns on the route.

The proposal was welcomed at this week's meeting of the council. Councillors particularly welcomed that the proposal would involve bypassing Tipperary Town while also tackling the poor safety record on the N24.

Cllr Joe Hannigan (Ind) sounded a word of warning that the motorway would entice shoppers away from local towns, as has been the case with the M7; “be careful what you wish for,” he said.

The council formally resolved to send the proposal to the Minister for Transport.
