Nenagh lecture on the Finnoe murders of 1843

The murder of Thomas Waller and his sister-in-law Harriet Vereker on Sunday November 12th 1843 at Finnoe House near Borrisokane will be the subject of the Ormond Historical Society opening lecture of the 2016-17 season on Monday November 7th.

It takes place at the Abbey Court Hotel starting at 8.30pm (sharp). Prominent local historian Danny Grace will be the speaker.

The Finnoe murders were greeted with shock both at home and abroad, one British newspaper describing them as “one of the most fiendish and brutal attacks ever made in Ireland”.

The lecture will examine how the Wallers came to Finnoe, the story of the murders, their probable motives and the resultant fallout. It will also look at the personalities involved and will place the murders in the context of crime in Tipperary at the time. The lecture will be illustrated.

Danny Grace has written and spoken extensively on the history of Co Tipperary. He has written books on the parish of Monsea & Killodiernan, the Famine in Nenagh Poor Law Union and, more recently, the Centenary History of Kiladangan GAA Club. He is a regular contributor of articles to the Tipperary Historical Journal and other local history publications. Readers of the Guardian will know him from his 'Glimpses of the Past' series.
