Nenagh suffer heavy home defeat

Nenagh AFC suffered one of their heaviest defeats in years on Sunday as they were hammered 71 at home by relegation candidates Charleville in the Limerick League premier division.

With their game against Carew Park having been postponed the previous Thursday, Nenagh should have been fresh for this encounter but were anything but and were brushed aside by the North Cork side whose youths team also handed a 7-1 defeat to Nenagh AFC later in the afternoon.

The home side were side went behind early on but following that missed a number great chances to level, including a header by Jordan Lewis,a free kick by Ciaran O'Reilly that cracked against the crossbar and a one-on-one by Danny Butler who saw his effort saved by the away keeper.

Nenagh were were punished severely for not taking these chances by a lively Charleville side who raced into a 3-0 lead after some good goals. Nenagh pulled a goal back with five minutes to go to the break through a good header by Ciaran O'Reilly but on the stroke of halftime Nenagh conceded a calamitous fourth goal when hesitation in the defence allowed the away striker to nip in and slot into the empty net.

Into the second half, Nenagh kept plugging away but it was the away side who scored again when their best player Pat O'Callaghan played a great ball through and the lively centre forward made no mistake with a cool finish. Charleville added two more goals soon after to put them 7-1 up and heading towards a well deserved three points after their journey to Tipp.

Nenagh are in the bottom half of the table after five games but with players coming back and more hard work trying to gel this young panel together, they hope they can start improving when they play Fairview away this Thursday.
