Pat Guilfoyle with new Nottingham track record holder, Skywalker Logan

Logan lights up Nottingham in English Derby

The annual Irish pilgrimage to the UK for the English Greyhound Derby commenced on Friday as Nottingham plays host for the first time and with a glittering array of stars set to do battle over six weeks of intense competition, the fastest of the 192 entrants for the first round last weekend was making the round trip from Moneygall as Skywalker Logan set new figures for the 550 yard trip with a sizzling track record of 29.05!

This column has made no secret of an admiration for the Pat Guilfoyle trained superstar since the very beginning of his career and while the racing community on home shores were already fully aware of his capabilities, Logan resoundingly confirmed that he is the fastest four-bend greyhound in training as the entire greyhound world looked on at Nottingham.

A suitable Trap 2 draw for Heat 23 on Saturday saw Skywalker Logan (Tarsna Havana/Sizzling Sarah) break on terms and retaining control of the inside rail, he would fend off the attentions of Holdem Zidane as the pair reached the opening turn together. Just showing in front off the second bend, Logan could have been called the winner from this point and as he eased clear of his closest rival to halfway, he was now racing against the Nottingham clock. A joy to watch in full flight, the Moneygall representative stretched further clear with every stride on the run to the line and confirmed his superstar status when lowering the record which had stood at 29.16.
