A masterful performance by Brendan Maher and positive return from a talented forward line saw Borris-Ileigh justify favouritism when securing a comfortable North Senior Hurling Championship win over a young and inexperienced Newport side last Sunday.

Nothing passed the former Tipperary captain at centre back, especially when his side were playing against a strong wind in the first half where Borris-Ileigh were matched by an enthusiastic Newport side leaving Borris one point ahead 0-6 to 0-5 at half time.

The second half was a different story though as Borris-Ileigh’s experience told where the youthful Kevin Maher and JD Devaney plus Conor Kenny led the attack as the trio scored eleven points in total to make the past week very worthwhile following their victory over Clonoulty/Rossmore in the county championship.

The only downside to Borris-Ileigh’s victory was the sight of Dan McCormack leaving the field with what appeared to be a shoulder injury but the Tipp man played well through as did Sean McCormack, Ray McCormack, Jody Harkin, Jack Hogan, Jerry Kelly and Niall Kenny.

Sean O’Brien was Newport’s best defender by far with Conor O’Mahony, Odhran Floyd, Cian Flanagan and Andrew Hickey with Peter O’Sullivan catching the ye up front.
