Padraig Nolan and Eriton Santos - new owners of the Killaloe Hotel.

Hospitality Managers purchase Killaloe Hotel

There is something uniquely authentic about the Killaloe Hotel. Perched right above the banks of the River Shannon, on the outskirts of the historic town of Killaloe, the surroundings are idyllic. The building itself, constructed three decades ago, blends history with modernity to create a distinct character and welcoming ambiance.

For Padraig Nolan and Eriton Santos, who became the proud owners of the property mid-summer, the Killaloe Hotel represents far more than just a business venture. Padraig, a native of Co Laois, brings extensive experience in the hotel sector. It all started some 30 years ago with a part-time teenage job at The Hazel Hotel in Monasterevin. Having completed a Business and Marketing degree at Carlow IT, Padraig has worked as General Manager in numerous high-quality properties, including locations in Moate, Co. Westmeath; the Curragh Racecourse, Co Kildare; the Castle Oaks House Hotel in Castleconnell, Co Limerick; and most recently, the Oranmore Lodge Hotel, Galway.

Eriton, a native of Brazil with a background in education and finance, has lived in Ireland for the past 12 years and holds a Hotel Management degree from ATU Galway.

Together, they established their own hotel management company, 'Hospitality Business Solutions', three years ago, operating the Oranmore Lodge Hotel under a management contract on behalf of owners Brian and Mary O’Higgins.

“The opportunity came to purchase our own property, which has been a lifetime ambition and dream of Padraig’s,” says Eriton. “We saw immense potential in the Killaloe Hotel. A boutique-style hotel like this offers a personal touch and a true connection between owner and guest. We want the Killaloe Hotel to be at the heart of the community and in time a premier choice for family celebrations.”

The hotel regularly hosts local groups and community gatherings. Padraig and Eriton look forward to embracing the area’s rich heritage and connecting with local businesses and residents alike.

HISTORY & CHARM

Built by the late Syl Addley over thirty years ago, the property retains key elements of its original charm. The ground floor offers a distinct quaintness and architectural value, notable features such as the portrait of Brian Ború hanging above the striking fireplace near O’Brien’s Bar honoring the historic high king who once ruled from nearby Kincora. Vaulted ceilings adorned with ornate chandeliers elevate both the bar and the Killaloe Suite.

Beyond the bar, an open balcony overlooks the marina and the River Shannon, offering a tranquil setting year-round. With versatile function spaces—including the Killaloe Suite, the 3rd floor Kinarra Suite with panoramic views of the marina, and the library—all perfect locations for private functions, big and small.

DESTINATION WEDDINGS

With extensive wedding management experience, Padraig feels the Killaloe Hotel offers a truly special destination wedding experience. A new wedding brochure launches in early November, offering excellent value for 2027 and 2028 dates and beyond. Guaranteed a one event per day policy and exclusivity for the points of the day that matter.

AN ECLECTIC FOOD OFFERING

The hotel’s culinary experience is led by Head Chef Sonu Kumar. Featuring an eclectic à la carte menu open for lunch and dinner, the kitchen serves traditional favorites alongside signature curries, fish dishes, and lighter options. Sunday lunch stands out as a highlight, making it an ideal choice for family dining.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

Both owners attribute the hotel’s success to date to the stewardship of General Manager Ruth O’Brien and her dedicated team, who have steered the hotel since it’s reopening in 2022. Padraig and Eriton emphasise that across all their roles, they have devoted the care, dedication, and passion essential to hospitality and business success. Now as property owners, they plan to inject fresh energy, dedication and passion into the Killaloe Hotel.

Padraig doesn’t shy away from the hotel’s chequered history and the natural nervousness that comes with this new venture, but remains optimistic and excited about the future, encouraged by the warm wishes of locals. Throughout his career, Padraig worked alongside key mentors and hotel owners—Margaret Kelly, John Joe Claffey, Colm Neville, and Brian and Mary O’Higgins—who shaped his approach to hospitality and business. Now an owner himself and proud to say, he is looking forward to the adventure ahead.

SIONNA SPA

A recent addition, Sionna Spa opened in 2022 and currently operates on weekends. Plans for 2027 include 7 day opening, additions of an exercise studio, an outdoor hot tub, and ladies’ membership options.

Padraig and Eriton genuinely look forward to welcoming guests and locals alike to their hotel. Please feel free to drop in and say hello.
