Book on Ireland's compelling trails
With its landscape of mountains, hills, valleys and spectacular coastlines, Ireland is not only a hiker’s paradise but also a land steeped in ancient history and folklore. Journeys Beneath Our Feet - the latest book by John G O’Dwyer - takes readers on a journey along some of Ireland’s most compelling trails, while also recounting the stories associated with each of the routes.
With engaging storytelling, the author shares the significance of the trails, blending geographical insights with cultural and historical tales. From the rugged Causeway Coast, where legends of ancient battles and shipwrecks abound, to the accidental discovery of an unknown ridge on Carrauntoohil and the story of how Wicklow’s Military Road came about, the book offers readers an immersive experience that connects readers to the essence of each location.
According to John G O’Dwyer, the book is aimed at a market that, so far, has not been served. “There are many books describing excellent walks in Ireland, but none, so far, that focus on the fascinating stories that are often associated with these trails. I have structured the book as a series of individual trail chapters grouped under regional headings with each walk illustrated by high-quality photography from each location,” says the author.
Combining hiking with storytelling, Journeys Beneath Our Feet is a resource that will inspire outdoor exploration while also deepening the readers’ connection to the deeply historic Irish landscape.
The the book launch will take place in the Cabragh Wetlands Centre, Thurles, on Thursday, October 22, at 7.30pm. The evening will begin with a wine reception, include a recital from the Ireland Peace Choir, and conclude with tea and coffee and light bites.
