Silvermines launches new community website
The Silvermines community has taken a major step forward in promoting the village and its surrounding landscape with the launch of a new website, www.silvermines.com, which has already attracted strong interest since going live last month. The platform aims to highlight the area’s rich heritage, outdoor amenities, local businesses, and the vibrant community spirit that defines this historic Tipperary village.
The project, developed by Silvermines Community Centre CLG, forms part of a broader effort to strengthen the digital presence of rural communities and ensure that visitors, residents, and potential investors have easy access to reliable, engaging information about the region.
A Modern Platform for a Historic Village
Silvermines is widely known for its mining heritage, scenic walking routes, and close-knit community life. However, until now, much of the information available online was scattered or outdated. The new website brings these elements together in one central, user-friendly hub.
Visitors to the site can explore detailed guides to local walking trails, including the popular Silvermines Slieve Felim Way, as well as information on historical landmarks, community organisations, and the many small businesses that contribute to the local economy. The site also features photography, stories, local videos, and practical information designed to support tourism and encourage people to spend more time in the area.
Patrick Hennessy, Director of Silvermines Community Centre CLG, said the website has already exceeded expectations in terms of engagement.
“We launched the site just a few weeks ago, and the response has been extremely positive.
People are looking for authentic rural experiences, and Silvermines has so much to offer — from our mining heritage and scenic amenities to the strong community spirit that makes this place special. The website gives us a modern platform to share that story and to support local enterprise.”
Supporting Local Businesses and Tourism
One of the key aims of the project is to promote local businesses and services. The website includes a dedicated directory where visitors can find information on accommodation, food and drink, local groups, and other local enterprises.
The hope is that increased visibility will help drive economic activity and encourage visitors to explore more of what the area has to offer.
Tourism is also a major focus. With interest in outdoor recreation continuing to grow, Silvermines is well positioned to attract walkers, cyclists, and heritage tourists.
The website provides maps, trail descriptions, and background information that make it easier for visitors to plan their trip.
“We want people to see Silvermines not just as a place to pass through, but as a destination,” Mr Hennessy added. “The natural beauty of the area speaks for itself, but having a strong online presence helps us reach new audiences and showcase the full range of experiences available here.”
A Community‑Driven Resource
The project team emphasises that the website is intended to be a living, evolving resource. Local groups, clubs, and organisations are encouraged to submit updates, event notices, and information that may be of interest to residents or tourists. This collaborative approach ensures that the site reflects the full breadth of community life.
Already, several community groups have expressed interest in contributing content, and the team hopes to expand the site further in the coming months with additional features, historical archives, and multimedia content.
The weekly Silvermines Newsletter and the Sunday Mass Missalette are also available on the website, making it easier for residents to stay informed and connected.
Part of a Wider Vision for Rural Development
The launch of the website aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen rural communities through digital innovation, improved communication, and enhanced visibility. Silvermines Community Centre CLG has been active in promoting digital literacy, community engagement, and local development initiatives, and the new website represents another step in that direction.
“Rural communities need strong digital infrastructure just as much as urban areas,” Mr Hennessy noted. “This project is about future‑proofing Silvermines, supporting local groups, and ensuring that our heritage and identity are preserved and promoted in a modern way.”
Looking Ahead
With early interest already strong, the team behind the project is optimistic about the website’s long‑term impact. Plans are underway to expand the business directory, add more historical content, and develop new features that will further enhance the visitor experience.
The community hopes that the website will not only attract tourists but also strengthen local pride and encourage greater participation in community activities.
