Newport go top of the Promotion tree for Christmas
Limerick District League Review
By Pat Sheehan
Weather again put paid to much of the Limerick District League schedule, although Newport Town saw plenty of action.
Premier ‘A’ League
Going into the weekend, Newport Town were part of a quartet of sides locked together at the top of the table in the Premier ‘A’ League.
Kilmallock and Moyross were not in action. Star Rovers, the other joint leaders slipped up on Saturday evening when they were held to a draw at Regional United.
Which all led to Newport’s game with bottom side Southend. A win would see them move top the top of the table and they did so in style hitting double figures against a young opposition.
Goals from Eoin Looney, Elliot Slattery and Luke Ryan had Newport killed off the game as a contest with twenty minutes and a double from Brian O'Sullivan made it 5-0 at the break.
Instead of easing up Newport went full on and added a further six goals after the restart.
Brian O'Sullivan completed his hat trick while goals from Luke Ryan, Ciaran Carey, Ciaran Carey and Conor Brett and Christy Doyle completed the rout.
Newport Town: Jimmy Fyffe; Eoin Looney; Pa Murtagh; Elliot Slattery; Dave O'Brien; Peter O'Sullivan; Luke Ryan; Conor Brett; Brian O'Sullivan; Callum O'Connell; Ciaran Carey. Subs: Christy Doyle; Darren Collins; David Ryan.
Lower Leagues
In Division 1B, Newport Town ‘B’ and Lisnagry played out a 2-2 draw. Conor McHugo and Dave Kirk netted for the Tipperary side. Breen Ryan and Adam Hourigan replied for Lisnagry.
In the Munster Under 17 Cup, Newport Town crashed out, going down 1-0 at home to Bridge United.
