There has been a wide and varied discussion by Regional Independent Group to prepare for the new Dáil term.

Helping those most in need

Deputy Michael Lowry attended a meeting with the Regional Independent Group, ministers and TDs in Dublin for a wide and varied discussion to prepare for the new Dáil term and to set out their shared priorities for Budget 2026.

Opening their discussions, the ministers and TDs reflected on progress during the first term of the 34th Dáil, including delivery of key commitments in the Programme for Government.

It was stressed in the meeting that the housing crisis and healthcare are among the most urgent national issues, demanding sustained focus and a collective effort to deliver solutions.

Looking ahead, focus now turns to Budget 2026, the first of five financial statements of this Government.

The group emphasised that this will be a defining Budget. It must deliver meaningful supports for people with disabilities, carers, families at risk of child poverty, and those who need targeted measures most.

The group will ensure that Budget 2026 continues to increase the income disregard for carers' allowance, working towards the full abolition of the means test.

People with disabilities must be treated fairly. Independent members are committed to building a new workable transport support scheme for people with disabilities. The group will work to ensure action is taken on providing dedicated mobility options for those who cannot use mainstream services.

Rural and regional development remains a key priority, ensuring prosperity is spread to every community. SMEs are central to this, and measures to reduce the cost of doing business are vital to keep the country competitive in the face of challenging economic times.

Independent members noted that Ireland is currently at record levels of employment, but with a growing population, forward planning is essential. Measures must be put in place now to meet rising demand for housing, healthcare, education, transport, and other services in the years ahead. Transparency, efficiency, and accountability in delivery are paramount to ensure that investment reaches the areas that need it most.

The group underlined that their independent voices in Government play a critical role in shaping policy that reflects the diverse needs of communities across Ireland. From rural and regional development to disability supports, they bring a grounded perspective to national decision-making, ensuring that priorities on paper translate into practical improvements on the ground.

As Independents working constructively with Government, Independent Members confirmed that they will continue to play their part in ensuring that Budget 2026, the National Development Plan, and the Programme for Government are delivered in full - supporting families, communities, and Ireland’s long-term prosperity.
