Every additional Garda strengthens our local policing service says Deputy O’Meara.

New Gardaí set to be allocated to Nenagh

Fianna Fáil TD Ryan O'Meara has welcomed the allocation of two new probationary Gardaí to Nenagh, saying the additional personnel will strengthen frontline policing and help keep local communities safe.

The allocation follows Friday’s attestation of 207 probationer Gardaí at the Garda College in Templemore. Following their graduation, the new members have now been assigned to Garda divisions across the country.

The latest attestation sees the organisation reach its highest numbers of sworn members since the foundation of the State at 14,980 and follows sustained progress in Garda recruitment.

Of the 207 new Gardaí attesting today, 84 will be deployed to the Dublin Metropolitan Region, 76 to the Eastern Region, 27 to the North-Western Region, and 20 to the Southern Region.

Deputy O'Meara said: “We now have the largest number of Gardaí in the history of the State. This latest attestation demonstrates that a strong pipeline is being built to increase Garda numbers in communities across the country.

“The allocation of two new Gardaí to Nenagh is particularly welcome. Every additional Garda strengthens our local policing service and helps ensure our communities receive the support and protection they deserve.

“High visibility policing remains a strong commitment for Fianna Fáil. Visible policing plays a vital role in preventing crime, supporting victims, and providing reassurance to our communities. Continued investment in Garda recruitment and resources is essential to ensure An Garda Síochána can meet the demands placed upon it.

“The work being led by my colleague, Minister Jim O’Callaghan, is delivering real results. This’s allocation means more Gardaí on our streets and stronger, safer communities.”

The allocation of Probationer Gardaí is initially to Training Garda Stations and allows for consequential inter-divisional transfers of other members.

As a result of consequential transfers every Garda Division will receive an increase in Garda numbers.

These newly attested 207 members of An Garda Síochána were recruited as part of the 2024/ 2025 recruitment campaigns.

Intake 261 commenced training on February 9, 2026, and have undertaken a blend of on-site learning in the Garda College, and experiential learning in training Garda stations.

The 207 newly attested Gardaí bring to over 2,400 the number of Probationer Gardaí attested since recruitment recommenced in 2022.
