Olympics’ Frawley retains Heptathlon title
Tipperary athletes delivered several outstanding performances at the AAI Games and National Combined Events Championships held at Morton Stadium, Dublin last weekend.
The championships formed part of Athletics Ireland's national competition programme and provided athletes with an important opportunity to compete at national level.
Nenagh Olympic athlete Laura Frawley produced another standout performance, claiming the Senior Heptathlon title with a personal best total of 5,141 points.
The performance marked the first time Frawley has surpassed the prestigious 5,000-point barrier and included four individual personal best performances across the seven-event competition.
Laura's victory was built on a series of strong displays throughout the championships, underlining her status as one of Ireland's leading combined events athletes.
Moyne AC's Katie Bergin delivered an impressive performance in the Senior 100m, securing victory in a new personal best time of 11.58s. Bergin's performance demonstrated excellent form and reinforced her position among Ireland's top female sprinters.
Niamh Madden (Nenagh Olympic) secured second place in the Senior Shot Put with a best throw of 11.79m, continuing her consistent form in national competition.
In the men's hammer events, John Dwyer (Templemore AC) produced an excellent series of throws to finish third in the Senior Hammer with 50.33m. Dwyer also claimed victory in the Heavy Hammer with a throw of 16m.
Clubmate Bobby Gleeson (Templemore AC) recorded a throw of 47.78m to finish fourth in the Senior Hammer, while Frances Gleeson (Templemore AC) competed strongly in the 6kg Hammer, placing eighth overall.
In the sprint events, David Forkan ran 11.94s to finish eighth in heat 2 of the Senior 100m. Paul White (Nenagh Olympic) delivered a strong run in the Senior 400m, recording a time of 50.06s. Jack Hickey (Nenagh Olympic) achieved a best leap of 5.88m in the Senior Long Jump.
SIAB Schools International
Two Tipperary athletes represented Ireland with distinction at the SIAB Schools Track & Field International held at the Mary Peters Track, Belfast, on Saturday.
The prestigious annual competition brings together the best schools athletes from Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales.
Cara Ryan (Clonmel AC) enjoyed an exceptional day, securing two international medals. Ryan claimed silver in the Shot Put with a throw of 13.33m before adding a bronze medal in the Long Jump with a leap of 5.83m.
Her double-medal performance was one of the standout achievements by an Irish athlete at the championships and demonstrated her remarkable versatility across both throwing and jumping disciplines.
In the same competition, Aine Frawley (Nenagh Olympic AC) produced an excellent performance to finish fourth with a jump of 5.71m, narrowly missing out on a podium place.
Competing against the best schools athletes from across Britain and Ireland, Frawley demonstrated her consistency and potential on the international stage.
The performances of Ryan and Frawley brought further recognition to Tipperary athletics and highlighted the strength of athlete development within the county. Their success at international level reflects the dedication of the athletes, coaches, clubs and schools that continue to support the growth of young athletics talent in Tipperary.
