Climate action a priority for Tipp community and voluntary groups

Celebration was in the air as community groups and sports clubs gathered for the launch of the Community Climate Action Programme 2026 by Cllr John Carroll, Cathaoirleach of Tipperary County Council (TCC).

Over €800,000 has been allocated to support projects addressing energy, travel, waste and biodiversity issues.

Congratulating the successful groups, Cllr Carroll commented: “This Community Climate Action programme supports you to deliver projects in your own organisations. But its impact will go far beyond that — reaching into your membership and users, the wider community and across the county as a whole. Thank you for are leading by example, showing what practical climate initiatives look like.”

Ruth Smith of the Tipperary PPN highlighted how developing resilient communities, sustainability and climate action are all intertwined and are vital for our futures. Equally important is supporting nature, according to Ann Marie Fleming, County Biodiversity Officer, who encouraged the groups to think native when planting and to facilitate natural regeneration.

“I am delighted to see so many local voluntary and community groups taking part in this programme for climate action. Building low carbon communities is a very positive step for our county in reaching the ambitious targets set out in our Tipperary County Council Climate Action Plan 2024 – 2029,” Clare Lee, Climate Action Co-ordinator with TCC stated.

The groups funded are spread across the county and include sports clubs, community centres, Tidy Towns groups, arts groups and more. Projects will be implemented in the coming year. The programme is funded by the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment.
