Extraordinary Eucharistic Ministers gather in Tipp

The Mary Immaculate College (MIC) Thurles community gathered on March 11 for a special training session for Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist, led by Dr Trish Kiernan in the campus chapel. The session formed part of a wider programme introducing students to the Eucharist as the source and summit of Christian life, exploring its scriptural foundations, place within Church teaching and central role in liturgical practice.

Participants were guided through the role and responsibilities of the Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist, including preparation for the distribution of Holy Communion, the importance of reverence and hygiene, and the practical skills required to assist the priest during the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Students also became familiar with the structure of the Mass; the layout of the church and the sacred vessels used in its celebration.

A practical rehearsal gave students the opportunity to engage with pastoral scenarios, including supporting coeliacs, accompanying children who have not yet received First Eucharist and responding sensitively to individuals from different faith backgrounds. The strong attendance reflected both the enthusiasm of the student body and the importance of this lay ministry in supporting schools, hospitals, private homes and those unable to attend Mass in person.

On April 15, Archbishop Kieran O’Reilly presided over the commissioning ceremony for Ministers of the Eucharist during the end-of-term Mass in the Everard Chapel.

Joined by Fr Jim Purcell, the Archbishop formally commissioned 28 MIC Thurles students and presented certificates in recognition of their preparation and commitment to this important ministry..
