National Biodiversity Week at Portumna Castle
During National Biodiversity Week, with ticketed entry, children can take part in Biodiversity Bingo, which leads them around the castle grounds and gardens to explore nature. All correct entries will be entered into a draw, with one winner drawn to win a copy of ‘The Great Irish Biodiversity Book’ by Éanna Ní Lamhna. Further information at the reception areas.
On Sunday, May 24, at 2pm, Noel Larkin will lead visitors on a leisurely walk, discussing the importance of trees around the castle, with particular emphasis on the Mulberry tree. He will also discuss the folklore of trees. This is also a free event. No booking required for the above events.
Book launch on Frances Walsingham, wife of Richard Burke, fourth Earl of Clanricarde, who built Portumna Castle. Portumna Castle is thrilled to invite you to the launch and talk of English Countess, Irish Earl: The Social World of Frances, Countess of Clanricarde, 1567–1632 by Bernadette Cunningham. This takes place on Sunday, May 24, at 4pm in Portumna Castle Gallery. This is a free event, no booking required.
Frances Walsingham was more than just a surviving daughter or a wife to famous men. This is the story of her 30-year partnership with Richard Burke, Earl of Clanricarde - spanning grand manor houses, blended families, and the complex politics of England and Ireland.
Bernadette Cunningham is a retired librarian based in Dublin. She has published widely on early modern Ireland and is the author of numerous books, including The Annals of the Four Masters: Irish History, Kingship and Society in the Early Seventeenth Century (Four Courts Press, 2014).
