1926 census in Newport

The population of the area and the composition of the community at that time has been revealed in the release of the first official population census for the Irish state recorded on April 18, 1926.

The census shows that Newport District Electoral Division (DED) had a population of 1,307, of which the largest percentage, a total of 233 were aged between 10 and 19 years and there were three men and three women over 90 years.

One of the oldest in the Newport DED at the time was Batt Gleeson (98) of Carrowkeale, Newport. The population of the Newport DED at the last Census in 2022 was 2,183.
