Nenagh school wins FAI cup
Nenagh's St Mary’s Primary School enjoyed a memorable and highly successful outing at the FAI Primary Schools Tipperary Cup, with their girls five-a-side teams delivering outstanding performances in Cahir on April 21.
Entering two panels of eight players, St Mary’s Red and Navy teams both represented the school with pride and determination. The Red team emerged as county champions following a dominant campaign, winning all of their group matches, with their narrowest margin a solid 2–0 victory.
They carried this impressive form into the county final, where they faced John the Baptist. Displaying excellent skill, teamwork and composure, the Red team secured a convincing 4–0 win to claim the title. Standout moments included a series of brilliant saves from Ella, who stepped into the goalkeeper role for the first time and performed superbly behind a strong and organised defence. Further up the pitch, Leahnora and Kate were in exceptional form, each contributing hat-tricks over the course of the competition.
The Navy team deserve great congratulations for their efforts and commitment throughout, recording one win and one draw while showing excellent spirit and determination in all their matches.
Following the final, the victorious squad were presented with their county medals and returned to a warm reception at the school, where they were welcomed with a guard of honour – a fitting celebration for a special achievement.
Attention now turns to the Munster Finals, which will take place at Cahir Park AFC on May 6. St Mary’s will be aiming to continue their remarkable run, with the added incentive of a place in the national final at the Aviva Stadium.
Credit must also be given to Emma O’Hara and Zoe Lyons for their excellent coaching and guidance, which played a key role in the teams’ success.
