Fundraising by Birdhill Wren Group
A volunteer group who came together more than four decades ago for an annual fundraiser to aid the provision of services and care for the seriously ill within the community in the region, have to date contributed in excess of €250,000 to the cause.
The founding of the Birdhill Wren Group, inspired by a local woman, the late Peggy O'Brien, was recalled at the presentation of €7,000 to Milford Care Centre, representing proceeds of their St Stephen's Day 2025 sponsored 10km walk.
Historical records show that it was challenging for her to inspire continuity during the early years, but she was resilient in her drive to support the cause and the solid foundation laid has stood the test of the decades.
When the impact of the Covid-19 restrictions stalled ‘Hunting of the Wren’ as a tradition on St Stephen's Day it was replaced by a sponsored 10km walk, which is proving equally successful in retaining strong support.
Speaking at the presentation of the cheque for €7,000 to Dave Lawlor for Milford Care Centre, at the Cooper's Bar, Birdhill, Tim Floyd, co-ordinator said that the commitment to raising funds for Milford Care Centre is ongoing in recognition of the caring services which they provide.
“We had over 100 walkers taking part and contributing to a very deserving local charity which we have been supporting for in excess of forty years and people now see it as an annual event at Christmas time and look forward to coming out in support,” he said.
“Some of the original founder members from the mid-1980s are still with us. In those days we'd be raising a few hundred pounds, but it has come a long way over the years and still a great success,” he added.
He said that local businesses have been very generous and special thanks to OBB Consulting Engineers, Fitzgerald Groundworks and McMahon Concrete Products for their generosity.
Dave Lawlor, on behalf of Milford Care Centre, thanked the group very much for their continued support, and co-ordinator of the event, Tim Floyd, assuring all that their contribution was very much appreciated.
While the overall operational costs of Milford Care Centre are now under the HSE, the additional community support funding contributes to the costs associated with local associated centres at Newcastlewest, Ennis, Nenagh and Thurles for the benefit of residents in those areas.
A cheque for €400 was presented by Elizabeth Floyd on behalf of the group to Joe Kennedy towards the Annual Birdhill Senior Citizens Dinner which is enjoyed by up to 100 local people each year.
