Works planned for river
The ESB has submitted a planning application for “essential maintenance works” to the Kilmastulla River.
The planned works consist of the removal of sediment and debris built up in river, along with repair work to the river embankment, which is shared with the Parteen Dam embankment. The works will take place at ESB lands at Coolnadornory, Birdhill.
“This work is part of the essential maintenance works that ensure water is channelled to the Kilmastulla river diversion,” the ESB stated in its planning application to Tipperary Co Council. “This diversion was put in place during construction of the Ardnacrusha scheme to divert flow downstream of Parteen Weir.
“The works proposed include removal of silt and to prevent scouring of the Category A Earthen Embankment Dam. A ‘Category A Dam’ is one which, if it failed, it would most likely result in loss of life, therefore essential maintenance is required. It is intended that this permission will allow for maintenance to be carried out at regular intervals over a sustained period of at least 30 years.”
The council is issue its decision on the application by March 16.
