‘Life is all a bottle of smoke’

‘A bottle of Smoke’ by Pat Mulcahy is a striking and engaging collection of poetry from a Tipperary writer known for his previous poetry book and children’s book.

What stands out most is Mulcahy’s remarkable ability to transform the time spent undergoing kidney dialysis into a source of creative energy. His poems provide a vivid exploration of both light-hearted moments and deeper reflections, offering readers a compelling journey through his words.

The collection ranges from humorous and witty pieces - such as playful poems about Hannons chicks, parking tickets or nurses and their horses - to more sombre, reflective works like ‘Why Did I Start?’, ‘Soul Mate’ and ‘Mother’. Mulcahy’s love for sport and his strong connection to the GAA are also woven throughout, with heartfelt tributes to his favourite All-Ireland winners, who interestingly are All-Ireland winners in 2025, just before the release of this winning collection! Regardless of the subject, it’s clear that Mulcahy is a writer with a deep sensitivity to the voices, people and emotions both around him and within him.

‘A Bottle of Smoke’ is a collection that invites readers to laugh, reflect and sometimes shed a tear. It’s a beautifully crafted series of poems that resonates with anyone who has ever navigated the complex terrain of life’s joys and challenges. I highly recommend this collection, not only for its literary merits but also because all proceeds go to the Irish Kidney Association. I’ll be purchasing additional copies as Christmas gifts, especially for family members living abroad. It’s a perfect way to share something meaningful while supporting a great cause.
