Holycross complete Junior League double

Holycross/Ballycahill 2-12

Burgess/Duharra 0-10

Holycross/Ballycahill and Burgess/Duharra travelled to the County Camogie grounds on Friday to contest the County Junior ‘B2’ League final.

Duharra opened the scoring with a point from Katie Grace. Holycross replied with a point each from Steph Dwan and Sarah Ryan.

With eleven minutes gone, Steph Dwan scored the point of the game, running out to collect the ball, picked it up beautifully and with her back facing the goal she powered the ball high towards the goal to score a magnificent point. Shortly after, she added to her tally with another point.

Burgess/Duharra’s Aishling Kennedy added another point which was cancelled out by a Kate Carr score after a powerful run from midfield.

Both sides continued to exchange scores with Burgess/Duharra scores from play coming from Aishling Kennedy, Seána Grace, Katie Grace, and a further point from free by Katie Grace in an entertaining first half to leave Holycross/Ballycahill three points up at the break, 0-8 to 0-5.

The second half started with a flurry, but it was Gráinne O’Dowd who opened the scoring with a goal for Holycross. Katie Grace then replied with two points for Burgess/Duharra. Caoimhe Doyle who had just come off the bench scored a beautiful point from play. Katie Grace was on song and slotted over two frees to keep Burgess/Duharra in touching distance.

Holycross looked to have more options up front and Steph Dwan and Sarah Ryan each added a point from play. With fulltime fast approaching, Sarah Ryan with her strength, pace and dogged determination scored 1-1 before the final whistle as the Mid side ran out eight-point winners.

Best for Burgess/Duharra was Katie Grace who scored all of her sides second half points. They also had very good performances from Iris Grace, Ella Slattery, Aishling Kennedy while Danielle Kyne kept them in the game with some fantastic saves.

It was a fine team performance from Holycross/Ballycahill and the first of two county league title wins in three days with their first team capturing the Junior ‘A’ title on Sunday with a number of players involved in both.
