Call for action over Tipp job losses

Tipperary Sinn Féin TD Martin Browne and Sinn Féin Councillor David Dunne have called for urgent action by the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment in response to recent job loss announcements.

Teachta Browne and Councillor Dunne made the call following the weekend’s announcement of 31 job losses at Corman Miloko which occurred only days after workers at Argos in Clonmel learned that they are to lose their employment due to plans to close the store at the end of June.

Teachta Browne said: “My thoughts are with everybody who is affected as a result of these announcements. These job losses represent terrible news for many families across Tipperary, and they will also have an impact on their communities.

“To see the two announcements of job losses of such magnitude in South Tipperary is very concerning. Councillor Dunne and I have contacted Minister Enterprise, Trade and Employment to ensure all rights and entitlements are afforded to the workers concerned.

“We have also asked for the Minister to engage with companies and the workers concerned to see if there is any way to save their jobs, or to secure redeployment.

“But we also have pointed to the need to ensure this trend doesn’t continue either locally or across the county, given the pressure that businesses and households are under due to the high cost of living and doing business.

Cllr Dunne said: “To be told that one of the last big employers in Carrick-on-Suir is to close is devastating news. Entire families will be affected by the closure of Corman Miloko.

“We requested that Minster Simon Coveney take action to address this before Carrick becomes an unemployment blackspot again. We have told the Minister that if this is to include the establishment of a taskforce to examine job creation potential in the area, then I would be supportive of such a move.2

Teachta Browne concluded: “We must do all we can to stop this trend from being replicated elsewhere in Co Tipperary. The pressures that businesses are under at the moment, coupled with the pressure that families are under must be acknowledged and responded to with the urgency it deserves.”
