Ormond Historical Society field trip to Lorrha

The Ormond Historical Society will visit the historic village of Lorrha on Monday evening, August 8 next.

The tour will begin at 7.30pm (sharp). Our meeting place is outside Maher’s Pub in Main Street. James Heenan (Lorrha) will be our guide for the evening.

Lorrha is a village steeped in monastic history. It has several significant ruins, all sited within easy walking distance of each other. We will visit and hear the story of St Ruadhán’s church with its high crosses and its holy well; the ruins of both the Augustinian and Dominican priories and a 750-year-old water mill.

We will also visit the Norman motte and bailey on the edge of the village. All are welcome and a small charge of €5 per person will be collected on the night to defray expenses.
