Cllr Hughie McGrath concerned over junction

A JUNCTION at the entrance to one of Nenagh's most prominent housing estates needs to be tackled because of the safety risks it poses, according to Councillor Hughie McGrath.

Councillor McGrath said work needs to be carried out at the junction of the entrance and exit to the Millers Brook estate on the Borrisokane Road.

Speaking at a meeting of the Nenagh Municipal District authority on Thursday last, he welcomed news that Tipperary County Council was now taking the estate in charge. But he added that he had concerns in regard to the entry and exit points of the estate.

"Traffic comes down the hill of the Borrisokane Road very fast and residents have told me they find it very difficult to drive out from the estate," he said.

Councillor McGrath said the junction needed to be made safer. "Vehicles on the Borrisokane Road are moving fast through the junction there and people are afraid something is going to happen; hopefully nobody will be knocked down there."

Councillor Ger Darcy agreed that something had to be done as it was a very busy area. He said the area near the junction was conjested by traffic and pedestrians crossing the road. There were shops and businesses in the area adding to the conjestion and drivers entering and exiting housing estates in the locality. "I would ask that we take a look at it. It would put a shiver in you spine there."

District Manager Marcus O' Connor said the council could look at the juntion again, but it had already installed improved lighting and put down a new surface. "I think that is all really we can do," he said, adding that the works were carried out in accordance with national guidelines.

Councillor McGrath felt the solution may be to put down a raised area on the road close to the existing pedestrian crossing in order to slow traffic. He said such a structure seemed to work well in the Cork town of Buttevant. The erection of traffic lights might also be something that could be considered. "We definitely cannot leave it the way it is."
