Divers clean up Dromineer!

Lough Derg Sub Aqua Club was joined by Waterways Ireland and members of the local community in an underwater cleanup of Dromineer last week.

Divers recovered a wide range of rubbish and debris from the busy harbour area, from tyres to glasses, bottles, cans, items of clothing, plastic bags, boating equipment, fishing tackle and electrical equipment, including a mobile phone. The material was gathered together for collection by Tipperary Co Council the following day.

Around 30 people in all were involved in the exercise between divers in the water, assistants on the shore and those onboard a Waterways Ireland boat, which provided cover on the fine summer evening with lots of activity in the area.

The cleanup was to have taken place in the spring but the pandemic put paid to that plan. Lough Derg SAC has cleaned up the popular amenity sites of Dromineer and Garrykennedy in conjunction with the local communities on a number of previous occasions.

Thanks to everyone who took part in last week's voluntary effort; another cleanup will be organised next year.
