Zoom talk on important War of Independence event

This Sunday, July 19th, at 7.30pm in conjunction with the Tipperary in the Decade of Revolution group, Kilbarron Terryglass Historical Society will host a Zoom talk on the life of Michael O'Kennedy and the events that led to his death on July 23rd 1920 following the burning of the barracks in Borrisokane during the War of Independence.

Michael was born in Bank Place, Nenagh, to Patrick Kennedy, formerly Lisduff, Aglish, and Julia Touhy, formerly Cameron, Coolbawn. Following his death, in order not to have any reprisals on his family he was buried in the Touhy family plot in the Old Graveyard in Kilbarron.

On Sunday last, a simple ceremony to commemorate his death was held where his nephew, Paudie O'Kennedy, laid a wreath in his memory. A very different event had been planned but, like many other events, this was all changed in February. The simplicity of last Sunday's event was almost a mirror image in many ways to the burial of Michael O'Kennedy 100 years ago.

To hear more on this story and the life of this young man of just 27 years, join us this Sunday night for the Zoom talk, which will be given by Sean Hogan and John Flannery of the Tipperary in the Decade of Revolution group. This group has travelled the county over the past few years commemorating the events of this period and have given us an insight and an understanding and an opportunity to discuss and talk about that part of our history.
We wish to thank everyone who at very short notice brought Sunday's event together and thank everyone involved  for your support. We also acknowledge the support and assistance from Tipperary Co Council.
