Davey digs deep for maiden victory at Galway

TRAPRISE

A fruitful source for local success throughout last year, the opening meeting of the new season at Galway saw Peter O’Brien kick start his 2020 campaign with a welcome return to the winner’s enclosure as Borris Davey claimed his maiden victory in thrilling fashion.

Lightly raced for an October 2017 whelp, Borris Davey (Romeo Recruit/Miss Alloy) had gone close in similar events to Saturday’s A5 525 yard contest but encountering plenty of traffic problems in his latest outings, a return to Trap 1 proved crucial when again slowly to stride. Trailing the pacesetters in the initial exchanges following a tardy break, the Borrisokane youngster would recover some ground on the run to the opening bend before a smooth gallop to the back-straight saw him pass rivals to his outside to lie second at the top of the back-straight. Two lengths in arrears, a powerful surge passing the halfway mark saw the O’Brien charge reduce the deficit before ranging up on the leader’s inside approaching the third turn. Inconvenienced however with that rival sweeping into the bend from his outside, Borris Davey was again shuffled back to a two length second with his winning aspirations severely dented.

Rallying on the run to the home-straight, a game renewed effort would see him back on the leader’s tail and this time switching wide to deliver one last challenge, a final drive for the line saw him secure a first career success in a thrilling photo-finish. A neck verdict in 29.53 (-20) will see Borris Davey rise to A4 grade for his next outing but that level should hold little fears on the evidence of this victory and he is a runner to follow closely in the early weeks of the new season.
