Musician presents Gold Disc to his former school

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Don Mescall was a special guest visitor at St Mary's Secondary School in Newport recently.

Limerick-born Don presented a Gold Disc from his last album, 'Lighthouse Keeper', to his old school. This was a touching occasion for Don and all at St Mary's.
Among those in attendance was his schoolday music teacher, Mary Ryan (retired).

Don has gone on to scale the heights of stardom with the musical inspiration he found in Newport. Having moved to London in the early '90s, he has recorded with the likes of Frances Black, The Backstreet Boys, Ronan Keating, Sir Cliff Richard, Aslan, Boyzone and Brian Kennedy. He has recorded four No 1 singles with Nathan Carter and one with Geri Halliwell.
'Lighthouse Keeper' went straight to No 1 in the Irish independent album charts when it was released last year. Don recently got together with Paul McCartney, Paul Brady, Gary Brooker, Albert Lee, Paul Carrack and Nick Mason to release another single, 'Live Long Rock 'n' Roll' (written and produced by Don) as a tribute to the late Wings/Joe Cocker guitarist Henry McCullough.

Don and his band have been playing some massive shows around the world; a standout performance was his headlining of this year's St Patrick's Day show in London, watched by an estimated 85,000 people in Trafalgar Square.
It was a humbling experience then for the students and staff at St
Mary's, and also Don himself, as he returned to his alma mater in Newport.

The school choir sang some songs with him. The choir will also sing with Don when he performs at the Univeristy of Limerick on November 16th.
