April set to shrink for club championships

There could be as few as two rounds of club championship games in April 2019 it was revealed at last weeks November Tipperary county board meeting in Thurles.

The annual November meeting decides on the competition structures for the following years leagues and championships and once again it lead to heated and lengthy debate which went on for over four hours.

It was disclosed in the minutes of executive committee meeting of 12th November that they were advising that just two rounds of club championship games would be played in April, first round of the county hurling championships on April 7th with the first round of the county football championships the following weekend.

This would allow a four-week lead in period for both the Tipperary senior hurlers and footballers championship openers on the weekend of 11-12 May, with respective managers Liam Sheedy and Liam Kearns in agreement with this proposal.

However, in the subsequent debate on the senior & intermediate club championships (inside), a number of clubs were concerned that the weekend of 21 April wasn't being utilised, three weeks before the start of the inter-county championships, as had been the case in 2018.
