Late burst sees Burgess into semi-finals

Burgess 2-17

St Mary’s Clonmel 1-15

By Michael Dundon in Clonoulty

A finishing flourish that yielded 1-3 in added time steered Burgess past St Mary’s of Clonmel and into the semi-finals of the Seamus O Riain Cup in Clonoulty on Saturday.

The victory maintained Burgess’ unblemished record in the group and sends them into the knockout stages, short-listed as a potential winner but it was a very close encounter that saw the sides level with a minute of ordinary time to play. A draw seemed the most likely outcome until Burgess, buoyed by a goal by Ben Cooney, put the game beyond the reach of their Clonmel rivals.

It was a victory that came at a price though as defender Kieran Ryan had to retire injured at half way and then in injury time Eoin “Tossy” Hogan who had come on as a sub in the second half, was helped off the field in injury time with a leg injury. Burgess will be hoping that both will be recovered in time for the semi-final but they could have time having avoided playing in a quarter final.
