History talk in Nenagh

Last Monday's talk on local history in Steeples, which was unavoidably cancelled at short notice, will now take place on Monday next, April 18th.

The topic, 'Rambles in Southill and Rapla', will look at the history of this area adjacent to Nenagh. Once a stronghold of the O'Kennedy clan, the townland has a chequered and interesting history.

Items covered will include Southill and Rapla Houses, the murder of Patrick Clarke in Southill, and the subsequent evictions, which resulted in almost 300 people being expelled from the area. The misfortunes visited on the Clarke family in the wake of these have echoes almost of Divine retribution. The talk will also examine the burning of Rapla House during the Civil War.

Come along to Steeples, O'Rahilly St on Monday at 11am.
