Council well stocked with salt
Tipperary Co Council has plenty of reserves of salt to spread on the county's main road this winter.
Director of Services Marcus O'Connor informed a meeting of the council that the relatively mild winter of last year means the council is well stocked this year with 2,500 tonnes of salt. The salt is stored mainly at depots off the M7 at Carrigatoher, Nenagh, and in Cahir.
But Mr O'Connor said it costs the council around €400,000 per year to salt the county's major roads. Adding extra routes would involve taking monies from the council's roads maintenance budget.
The director was responding to calls to expand the road salting programme and to salt roads outside schools. He suggested that school management could purchase small quantities of salt if necessary.
Cllr Jim Ryan (Ind) also wanted the council to salt footpaths. He referred to a number of incidents where people had slipped on ice and injured themselves.
Tipperary routes for salting are listed on the council's website.
