New traffic plan for roscrea

Proposals are being considered for a new traffic plan in Roscrea. Chairman John Lupton told last week’s meeting of Roscrea Community Development Council that the focus needs to be on pedestrian safety. There is a particular need to enhance pedestrian safety at Rosemary Square and Market Square, and a general need for greater pedestrianisation of the town, he said.

Cllr Michael Smith (FF) said he had raised the issue with the Thurles-Templemore Municipal District

Council. Roscrea has not had a traffic plan since 2002 and much has changed since then with the arrival of new Dunnes Stores, Tesco, Lidl and Aldi developments.

Cllr Smith pointed out that Castle St was closed for the ‘Taste of Roscrea’ festival last year and this showed how pedestrianisation can work in the town. He encouraged RCDC to get involved in the traffic plan, which is to be further discussed at council level.

In support, Cllr Micheál Lowry (Ind) said Roscrea needs a plan that fits the town rather than one that is forced on the town.
