Moneygall bow out of Intermediate Hurling Championship

Tipperary Water County Intermediate Hurling Championship Quarter Final

Moyne-Templetuohy 1-16

Moneygall 0-13

Moneygall bowed out of the race for the County Intermediate Hurling Championship following a quarter final defeat to Moyne-Templetuohy at Dr Morris Park, Thurles last night.

The game was originally scheduled for last Sunday but was postponed due to a bereavement in the Moyne-Templetouhy club.

Playing the game midweek under lights wasn't ideal for either side and wasn't helped by in that it was played in wet conditions throughout but both sides produced a very competitive 65 minutes hurling with the Mid Tipp side deservedly progressing to the semi-final against St Mary's this Sunday.

Both sides had difficulty getting their eye in with their shooting and it was five minutes in before Moneygall got the opening score from midfielder Conor Ryan. However, by the quarter hour, Moyne-Templetuohy had rattled off six unanswered points through John Hassett, Diarmuid Fogarty (2 frees), Tom Meade, Jason Bergin and Tipperary panellist Tomas Hamill who was playing at centre forward.

In the conditions, a physically bigger Moyne-Templetuohy side were dominating the puckouts with Moneygall struggling to win much ball from where their forwards were living off scraps. However they never panicked with Joe Fogarty adding a fine point before playing in Sean Fogarty for a well worked point to cut the deficit to three points after seventeen minutes. Tom Meade responded with his second before Adam Hogan responded with the first of two frees for Moneygall.

The best goal chance in the first half came for Moyne-Templetuohy when Diarmuid Fogarty ran through the middle but Moneygall keeper Mark Fanning was up to the challenge. However Moyne were always looking the more likely up front, even though they struck seven first half wides as John Hassett and Tom Meade found the target once more, to just one response from an Adam Hogan free as the Mid Tipp side led 0-9 to 0-5 at half time.

Diarmuid Fogarty's only point from play extended Moyne's lead at the start of the second half before Brian Teehan hit back with a fine score for Moneygall. Fogarty would stretch Templetuohy's lead to six points with two close range frees as the Mid Tipp side looked to turn the screw.

Then came the turning point when Moyne-Templetuohy got the rub of the green. Firstly, Moneygall's Willie Greene saw a long range shot hit the post and bounce just over the bar for his side but less then sixty seconds later, at the other end a free from Diarmuid Fogarty came back of the post but only to the waiting sub Diarmuid Leahy who fired to the net in the 40th minute.

With Diarmuid Fogarty adding a free three minutes later to extend the lead to nine points, the game looked done and dusted. However to Moneygall's credit they made a few switches, including bringing an extra man to midfield to try and win more ball, and also moved Phil Fanning from full to centre back. They would shoot six points in as many minutes from the 47th to the 53rd minute as they took the game to Moyne, forcing five frees which Adam Hogan converted with captain Ger Kirwan adding a long range point from play.

It was now game on as Moyne-Templeuohy were beginning to look out of sorts as their lead was whittled down to three before Tomas Hamill stepped up to hit a relieving point three minutes from time with Diarmuid Fogarty putting the seal on the win with two late frees to see Moyne-Templetuohy now within two games of an immediate return to the senior ranks.
