Halloween fireworks festival in Nenagh

Halloween revellers are invited to come and enjoy a fireworks extravaganza in Nenagh next Monday night as part of the annual 'Spleodar' community arts festival.

The professional fireworks display is scheduled to take place in the Nenagh CBS grounds on Halloween at 7.30pm.

Local authorities are discouraging people from lighting fireworks without professional supervision. A garda spokesperson this week said that gardaí would be patrolling the Nenagh district on the lookout for people using fireworks illegally. Anyone found in possession of fireworks or bangers without licence will be prosecuted.

Gardaí will also be on the lookout for bonfires in the district. Last year Tipperary Fire & Rescue Service responded to 16 incidents during the Halloween period, at a cost of €13,000. Substantial clean-up costs were also incurred removing waste material after the bonfires.

Tipperary Co Council has issued a reminder that the uncontrolled burning of waste, particularly in bonfires, is illegal and is highly damaging to the environment.

The council and the gardaí are encouraging people who want to see fireworks to attend the professional display at Nenagh CBS next Monday night. The hotly anticipated display is the final event in the three-day Spleodar festival.

The organisers advise that there will only be pedestrian access to the CBS grounds, via Summerhill and the Dublin road. The Dublin road entrance will close at 7.20pm sharp.

Parking is available at the Abbey Court Hotel and Nenagh Leisure Centre. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Festival stewards will be on duty at the event and no alcohol, fireworks, sparklers or pets will be allowed into the grounds. There will be an admission charge of €2 per person.

The organisers are advising people to dress warmly and to remain inside the barrier area for their own safety.

Now in its 16th year, the Spleodar festival is billed as “a feast of fantastical, fun filled events” taking place in Nenagh throughout the bank holiday weekend. Among the highlights is 'Inferno – The Burning Quest' at Nenagh Arts Centre on Saturday night. This free outdoor show features a cross-section of circus skills, physical theatre, comedy and pyromania as three hapless pirates take you on a fiery and spectacular adventure.

Minecraft tournaments, treasure hunts, pirates, pigs and printmaking, fire shows, and fashion, hip-hop and horror ensure that there's something for everyone at this year’s Spleodar festival. For further details and bookings, visit the Nenagh Arts Centre website, www.nenagharts.com.
