Tipperary county council does not have resources to salt every road

As a cold snap turns Tipperary arctic this week, the County Council has admitted that it does not have the resources to salt every road and footpath under its control.

Director of Services Marcus O' Connor told last Monday's meeting of the council in Nenagh that ensuring that the most trafficked roads in the county were salted was a huge logistics exercise.

He said the council had over one thousand kilometres of road to salt, at a cost of €700,000 a year. 'It's just not possible to do every road in the country; we don't have the manpower to do it,' said Mr O' Connor, who added that the same situation applied to footpaths.

He was responding to a motion tabled by Councillor Jim Ryan in which he called on the council to ensure that as many roads  as possible are salted when required.
